Your home should keep you healthy
People are getting sick because of their rental home.
People are dying because their homes are too cold.
Many Australian rentals are ‘glorified tents’ that don’t keep people warm in winter. This makes people sick and causes avoidable deaths.
People can barely use their homes in a summer heatwave.
In Summer, rental homes get hot and stay hot. Renters struggle with heat stroke and dehydration, and hot weather harms mental health.
Renters are forced to pay more to stay healthy.
People who rent are forced to spend more on energy because their homes are sub-standard. A healthy home for your family shouldn’t break the bank.
Governments must require landlords to make rental homes safe.
Currently, property investors can get away without doing basic things to ensure a renter’s home is healthy. We are calling on all Australian governments to introduce basic standards to cut energy waste and ensure healthy homes for people who rent.
“The house is freezing and there are holes in the floor. I’ve done what I can, but there’s only so much I can do as a renter. I’m from North America, but the houses here are so much colder.”
”I’m always worried about my bill, in winter I wait until I can’t stand it anymore before I turn on any heating.”
